NHL ACADEMY
One of many pieces of work I’ve done for the NHL over the years. This is my favorite one not affiliated with ESPN or NBC Sports or any sponsor, but directly for the NHL. The goal of the work was to use digital media to put the grueling nature of an NHL season on display. The absurdity and contrast of an online school that would prepare you for a career in the NHL hit the nail on the head. The idea was chosen because of its ability to appeal to people who hadn’t really discovered the sport yet, although it was mainly passed around by the most fanatical members of the hockey religion.
We acted, shot, edited, coded, illustrated, and animated ourselves (the coding and art was the work of the amazing Eric Sutton). I actually did a lot of the sound recording and editing myself as we were going for something intentionally grainy and off. I also played the organ very badly, but as well as I could. After all, as the site mentioned, music was provided by NHL Organ-Player Academy and I hadn’t graduated yet.
